How to Keep fit on Mars
While you and I live in cyber space
“I need that for my back. What a great invention” -William Shatner
some people are preparing for life in outer space– target Mars. In Russia six recently emerged men lived in cramped, windowless compartments for more than 17 months to simulate a mission to Mars. On the American front, the Mars Institute has created two drive-able Mars Rovers, with mechanical arms for the human exploration of Mars. These rovers explore a Mars-like 18-mile-wide asteroid crater. It’s on Canada’s Devon Island, in the high arctic. This, the largest uninhabited island in the world sports a bizarre “arctic desert” that looks like, and is about as inviting as, Mars itself.
These researchers live the life of real-life astronauts by simulating what it would be like to explore Mars. This means being confined for days and sometimes weeks in the cramped pressurized cabin of their Mars rovers.
But how to keep fit when there is little or no gravity? Muscles quickly wither and atrophy with no use. Some astronauts have experienced severe re-entry problems, collapsing upon encountering earth’s gravity.
Pascal Lee, chief researcher for the Mars Institute and crew are aware and working on that problem. Light weight and portability are a must because very ounce of cargo launched into outer space costs a fortune. Exercise devices must also work in zero gravity since the gravitational pull is much less on Mars. No free weights allowed in space. The entire body must also be exercised even in cramped quarters. Some astronauts do isometric exercises, but Mr. Lee is trying something new, an isometric and resistance based mechanical exerciser called the kinesthetic exerciser for transforming yourself – or simply: kefty.
Mr Lee isn’t the only space explorer to recognize device’s utility. Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, obtained the research exerciser at this year’s GBK Oscars gifting suite. His comment,” This is great. I can use it for my back”.
Just back from the arctic, the Mars Institute crew successfully used the kefty to keep in shape while in the confines of their Mars Rover on Devon Island. Being just a stones throw from the North Pole. perhaps Old Saint Nick himself may be using the kefty to trim that famous holiday paunch he’s been sporting. Just kidding- maybe.
The Kefty is new and patented. It was invented by Nick Musachio of St. Paul , Minnesota. The Kefty is made and manufactured in America. It is hypo-allergenic, and has been designed using human factors and ergonomics to be used by wheelchair users. It is made of high impact polymers and has variable resistance from 0-60 lbs. Some years ago my mother in law, who grew up in North Dakota on a farm during the depression when “Happy Meal” meant pie for dessert made a surprising comment. She used the expression “little fatty” to describe her grandchild. My wife Bette and I were a little shocked, but also bemused at the retro-ness of the expression. Not anymore. After teaching school and parenting, I see nothing funny about childhood obesity –nor adult obesity for that matter. It’s epidemic. I’m also deeply disturbed at how nutritionless food is marketed to children.
As a child, I remember going into McDonald’s Hamburger joints. Back then they actually crowed having sold so many “Millions” of hamburgers. They would say 2 million sold, and then update it occasionally. Looking back, it seems sort of like Dr. Evil in Austin Powers talking about a extorting “million dollars” like it was a great amount of money. Now they just say billions and billions sold.
The point I’m making is back then eating out was occasional and not daily. Additionally, the burgers were small, the french fries were small, and if you got Coke, it was 8 ounces. I kid you not. Back then fast food was a luxury. Now it’s the cheapest meal around, it’s huge, and you get free refills. It’s also approximately three to four times the calories of the old meals.
I absolutely don’t blame McDonalds for this. They simply are following America’s new food pyramid consisting of: Fat, salt, and sugar – high fructose corn syrup to be exact. It’s what we want. Our biology wants us to hoard fat; be tranquilized by sugar: and flavor it all with a lot of salt. By the way, it’s killing us, and making us hate ourselves for being fat, even children. Could it be that Happy Meals and the like eventually lead to self loathing obese children?
There are many factors at work. We have a lot of teachers in my family. Schools have ended up being places of unending “bottom time” for children. Sit on your butt all day every day. In school’s desperate attempt at passing mandatory tests, and keeping order in the hallways and playgrounds, they have virtually eliminated physical activity from the daily routine. Fifteen minutes, maybe, for the playground, 20 minutes to eat lunch, 3 minutes between classes, no or occasional phy-ed. Are you seeing a pattern? May the most lethargic win this race. May the wiggly and active boys be considered “sick” and be subdued with ritilin and the like.
If grade school were a job, it would violate labor standards which mandates a 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks daily. We have decided as a company to try to fight childhood obesity and have made it part of our mission to bring activity back to schools in the hopes that more active children will be happier, healthier, and feel better about themselves.
We have donated units to two school systems and are proud to say in one innovative classroom kids are learning and exercising at the same time. Our devices are silent and handheld. We hope this will become a trend in the not so distant future.

Gifting guru to the stars, Gavin Keilly, of GBK productions is always on the hunt for unique and cutting edge gifts. Welcome the KEFTY Home Gym. Lucky stars attending P Diddy’s Super Bowl Weekend Party, the Snoop Dog’s NBA All-star party at the Playboy Mansion, as well as GBK’s luxury gifting Suite honoring 2011 Oscar winners and nominees will be receiving special KEFTY Home Gym packages. A blinged version of the exerciser will also be displayed, encrusted with over 1300 Swarovsky crystals, adding some glitter and pizazz to the KEFTY’s Hollywood debut.
At P Diddy’s party none other than the Situation himself tried out a KEFTY. After taking time to compare six packs with KEFTY spokesman and Olympian, Johann Jack, the Jersey Shore crew made off with four KEFTYs. Perhaps they will be combining laundry and gym into one step with the ultra portable KEFTY. They wouldn’t be the first to do so. It’s that portable.
Notably, both the Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, and the Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, also now own a KEFTY. As well, CSI Miami’s Omar Miller, and New York Jet’s Quarterback Mark Sanchez took one home.
Past celebrities to Gavin’s events include: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Helen Mirren, Forest Whitacker, Kathy Griffin, Justin Timberlake, Eva Longoria, Pierce Brosnan, Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John, Angelina Jolie, and Jersey Shore’s the Situation, to name a few. Perhaps they all will be looking a little more buff as the result of a KEFTY exercise regimen come spring.
KEFTY is made of advanced polymers, weighs 4 pounds, and utilizes isometric tensions to efficiently engage the entire body in hundreds of compound exercises. All components of the KEFTY and its final assembly are made in the USA. For more information, please visit: http://www.KEFTY.com
KEFTY was developed by Minnesota inventor and KEFTY CEO, Nick Musachio. “The unique patented device has resistance in two directions and does not need any external attachment points or gravity to work. Nature lovers from Minnesota to New York to Maine have always endured winter, and dreamed of summer. All that changed with the advent of Lyme disease, and its association with Fibromyalgia, commonly referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. My friend Dr Karen Vrachota works extensively with Fybromyalgia patients as well as patients with other autoimmune disorders. The genesis of the disease, disorder, or ailment is more often than not difficult to analyze. The deer tick may often be the culprit. Another theory or agravant is environmental toxins, often from plastic.
Diuk-Wasser, M.A., Gatewood, A.G., et al., 2006
Karen has found that many CFS sufferers respond well to exercise. Being that I’m and inventor, and had my exerciser in the car, I showed it to her. It’s an exerciser that is a portable home gym. She liked it, but was wary, because it was made of high impact plastic. Karen was an early crusader against using plastics for food containers, especially in the microwave. Then I explained that the polymers I used were RoHS certified, i.e. safe polymers that don’t leach toxins. RoHS stands for reduction of hazardous substances. It’s a European standard for plastics.
What traits we share with the lowly sponge
We as humans are many things. Like living sponges we are filtering organisms. We have always ingested toxins, filtered them, and moved on. What has changed is the number and strangeness of the toxins. We are now ingesting new and never before ingested toxins that float in the air, our food, liquids, and even through our skin. Many of them from are from plastics.
A New World to Explore: Plastics
My early work was with electric vehicles, and my exerciser was an offshoot of that. I had never really worked with plastics before. As a matter of fact I used to like burning plastic on the end of a stick and dripping it into the fire. It makes a great noise. I won’t even tell you how much fun it was burning mothballs. Needless to say I don’t play with plastics and fire anymore.
Off-gassing that you can’t blame on your dog
BPA, phthalates, lead, and other fun stuff exist in many plastics. Can you believe I spelled phthalates correctly? Aren’t I a phphabulous speller. Did you ever notice the white film on your wind sheild. That is plasticizer. Plastics are basically crystals held together with goo. The plasticizer is the goo. If it is BPA it also resembles estrogen- that’s right female hormones. There was once a j0ke, “How do you make a hormone?” Take away … Luckily, I forg0t the answer. But these products are leaching into the environment and possibly causing havoc with our hormonal balance leaving some males with breasts, low sperm counts, and female characteristics. That’s not to mention what it is doing to fish and amphibians.
Lead in Plastic- your kidding me
RoHS is an acronym for Reduction of Hazardous Substances. It is a European standard also prevalent in the US. RoHS compliant polymers don’t leach phphalates, BPA, and don’t contain lead or cadmium. US and European industry have regulations, lawyers, and liability insurance. Yes they drive up front end costs, but they also protect you, an probably lower your medical bills. It costs a lot of money to not use hazardous materials, but is worth it. Anyone who has been to China knows the costs of living in a land where the sun shines like a dim bulb through the toxic haze of brown coal, smokestack effluent, diesel fumes and the like. Many Chinese are chronically ill just from breathing.
Lead in plastic? Yup! It’s legal in the USA. Lead makes plastic easier to mold, and is also used in pigments. Lead is not in RoHS compliant polymers or my products, or USA made polymers.
Our supplier had a customer that decided that he could get his product cheaper in China. Three months later, the same customer comes back to Brian and says,”Brian, do you want to buy a truckload of Chinese plastic pipes? They’re all full of lead and I can’t use them.”
Latex is another product that people are intensely sensitive to. Oddly it is completely natural. There is immediate sensativity to latex and irritant contact dermatitis that can be delayed. Both can cause rather severe reactions including anaphylaxis. Latex is a very useful product, especially in exercisers, until it bites back. Latex is stretchy but breaks down rather quickly in sunlight. So I’ve gone to latex free product that costs a little more, but it also lasts way longer because it’s tougher. So there you have it my friends, a little more knowledge to walk the earth with.

Follow a couple easy steps and you’ll find yourself on the road to food balance and self awareness when it comes to food & your feelings.
Consider for a minute your fridge. What it contains is your life force. You can’t live without food, but certain foods can live without you.
Step 1: Clean out the junk from your fridge. Throw it out or give it to a friend. No need to feel guilty and say you can’t waste food. This is about your health and taking a much needed step towards a healthier lifestyle.
Step 2: Go to the grocery store and find healthy, yummy food that will tempt you and feed you body the energy and nutrients that it needs to sustain you through the day and help you to achieve the weight loss or maintain your figure.
FOOD & YOUR FEELINGS
Feelings and food have become synonymous and is a growing common thread by which people have associated themselves with food. Jessica Simpsons famous “fat picture” brought attention to her pattern of “eating her feelings” to public media. It has lead to studies of inner peace and binging, yo-yo dieting and patterned weight gain and loss. For example, when Miss Simpson’s life is going well or she’s in love and her frame of mind and spirit is good she appears to drop to her body’s ideal weight, effortlessly. When she is off balance, unhappy or depressed she tended to eat her feelings and gains a dress size or two. This is typical trend and more and more people are becoming aware of how they function in these good and bad situations and taking control of their decision making and working to stay balanced.
when it comes to feeling, this may be one of the reasons we gravitate towards binging on junky foods. Think about it. A lot of us are guilty of eating our feelings. Or feel guilty or bad about something and eat to stuff those feelings. That in itself becomes a pattern and can become an addiction. You don’t have to take this.
Step 1: Next time you start snacking ask yourself this, “Why are eating? Are you bored? Frustrated? What are you feeling? Is it uncomfortable? Do you need comforting”? Then listen to yourself. It’s okay to eat what you have in hand. Guilt does us no good around food. Everything in moderation they say. But keep track of your answers and watch your eating habits change. When are made aware of our patterns we can then go ahead and make a change. If we are unaware of our patterns, we don’t know what to change.
Step 2: Always make sure you have plenty of good foods to snack on. Plan ahead and when you’re at the grocery store, pick out out lots of delicious and healthy foods that your excited to try and feel good about snacking on.
Step 3: try bringing your own lunch to work. That way, you can plan head and don’t get caught overly hungry and grabbing fast food or something pre-packaged at the convenience store. Take charge of your food intake. But remember, just because it’s healthydoesn’t mean you can eat twice as much. Calories count.
We at KEFTY are not shrinks, we can only suggest that you can improve yourself by taking care of your body as well as your soul. They work in tandum and when one is off, the other suffers. You are worth taking the time to examine where you are on your life’s path and asking yourself, “What do I like about myself and what would I like to change to make my quality of life better”. It starts with a choice.

Nick Musachio announced today that his revolutionary home exerciser system has been selected by the Mars Institute for use in Summer 2011 onboard concept rovers for future human Moon and Mars exploration operated by the Haughton-Mars Project on Devon Island, High Arctic.
They selected it because it is a Made-in-USA handheld exerciser with a rubber-tensioned tubing frame made of high impact polymers. It was developed by Minnesota inventor, Nick Musachio. “The unique patented device has resistance in two directions and does not need any external attachment points or gravity to work. At only 4 lbs, it is lightweight, compact, adjustable, silent, smooth, exercises the entire body, and is easily taken apart for travel, including travel to Mars!” says Musachio.
The Haughton-Mars Project (HMP) is a pioneering field research project in the extreme, Moon and Mars-like environment of Devon Island in the High Arctic. There, new concepts are being developed and tested by NASA and other space agencies for future space exploration. In particular, the HMP’s Moon-1 and Mars-1 Humvee Rovers support studies at NASA on the design and use of future pressurized vehicles for astronauts on the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Pressurized rovers, like sealed motor-homes, are vehicles in which astronauts would drive, live, work and sleep in “shirtsleeves”, and go outside in spacesuits as needed.
“Astronauts on long-duration drives on the Moon and Mars will be cooped up for days to weeks on end within the tight confines of their pressurized rovers. They will need an effective way to exercise and stay in shape. We think this exerciser could be the answer” says planetary scientist Pascal Lee, Director of the Haughton-Mars Project. “It combines key attributes that NASA would look for in an exerciser for spaceflight: it is effective, safe, lightweight, compact, easy to use, versatile, and affordable“.
How can i stay fit on Mars? Here's the answer.
In the summer of 2011, Musachio will assist the HMP by providing his exerciser equipment for testing, as well as advise the HMP’s Moon-1 and Mars-1 crewmembers on optimal use of the Kefty portable gym system.
